Spiritual-Gifts-PostSpiritual gifts are given to bring glory to God, they were never given to bring glory to man. Some churches will refuse to operate in the spiritual gifts and other will misuse them, while others will choose some gifts over others. Many churches hold to the viewpoint that the gifts died when the apostles did; but why would Jesus give us His best then take it back at His death – He wouldn’t. He is very much alive and so are the gifts He gave us. He gave us these gifts so we could fully complete the work of the ministry – working within the body until we all come into the fullness of God – the full knowledge of the Son of God. Romans 1:11closeRomans 1:11 11 For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— (ESV) (AMP) – For I am yearning to see you that I may impart and share with you some spiritual gift to strengthen and establish you. Spiritual gifts are meant to encourage you. When you see how the spiritual gifts can impact your life – it will get you happy – you’ll get your ‘shout on!

1 Corinthians 12close1 Corinthians 12 Spiritual Gifts 12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one inspanidually as he wills. One Body with Many Members 12 For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13 For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. 14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. 15 If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 16 And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. 17 If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? 18 But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. 19 If all were a single member, where would the body be? 20 As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. 21 The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” 22 On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, 23 and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, 24 which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, 25 that there may be no spanision in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. 26 If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. 27 Now you are the body of Christ and inspanidually members of it. 28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. (ESV) : 4-11 – There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are differences of ministries but the same Lord, and there are diversities of activities but it is the same God who works all in all. But, the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all. For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit. To another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles. To another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another – different kinds of tongues and to another the interpretation of the tongues. But, one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

The Greek word ‘spiritual’ [literal meaning – ‘invisibility and power] was first seen in the scriptures after the day of Pentecost. It doesn’t appear anywhere until then. The gifts were meant to be uplifting – they will never give you the permission to be critical. We are in church to ‘build up the body of Christ’. This responsibility does not lie on the pastors or the leaders but upon the body. So your spiritual gift has nothing to do with you – you didn’t originate it, it was at His will – for His purpose for His glory. All the gifts are needed for the body to be fully edified.

1 Corinthians 12:14close1 Corinthians 12:14 14 For the body does not consist of one member but of many. (ESV) – Even so , the body is not made up of one part but of many. Keep the concept of spiritual gifts when you read this. All the gifts are needed just as all the parts of your body are needed to make the whole. Vs 18-23 – But as it is, God has placed and arranged the limbs and organs in the body, each of them, just as He wished and saw fit and with the best adaptation. But if the whole were all a single organ, where would the body be? And now there are certainly many limbs and organs, but a single body. And the eye is not able to say to the hand, I have no need of you, nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. But instead, there is necessity for the parts of the body that are considered more weak; and those parts of the body which are considered ignoble are the very parts in which we invest with additional honor, and our unseemly parts and those unsuitable for exposure are treated with modesty and decorum. Remember this is talking about spiritual gifts and not natural gifts.

1 Peter4:10-11 – As each of you has received a gift [a gracious divine endowment ] employ it for one another as good trustees of God’s many-sided grace [ faithful stewards of the extremely diverse powers and gifts granted to Christians by unmerited favor]. Whoever speaks let him do it as one who utters oracles of God; whoever renders service, [let him do it] as with the strength that God furnishes abundantly, so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.

There is a difference between spiritual gifts and spiritual fruit. Both are works of the Holy Spirit, however, they are two distinct workings of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual gifts you have nothing to do with, you receive it – spiritual fruit is something you develop as you operate in His gifting’s. It is about our availability and not our ability. Spiritual gifts are designed to display God’s power at work not ours.

Galatians 5:22-23closeGalatians 5:22-23 22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (ESV) (AMP) But the fruit of the Holy Spirit [ the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy [gladness] peace, patience [ even temper], kindness, goodness [benevolence], faithfulness, gentleness [meekness and humility], self-control [self-restraint, continence]. Against such things there is no law [ that can bring a charge]. Even with all these the Standard Operating Procedures for a Christian = Walk in LOVE, Walk in FAITH and be Led by the Holy Spirit. We need to keep these three factors in everything we do.

If you have a question as to whether or not you should do something, ask yourself those three questions – if you answer no to any of them then I wouldn’t do it. You can ignore them and do things your own way, but you should expect God’s correction at some point. 1 Corinthians 12:31close1 Corinthians 12:31 31 But earnestly desire the higher gifts. And I will show you a still more excellent way. (ESV) Paul states we should covet or earnestly desire the spiritual gifts.

The difference between a ‘talent’ and a ‘spiritual gift’ is this: A ‘Talent’ – is a result of genetics or training. A ‘Spiritual Gift’ is the result of the Power of the Holy Spirit.

A talent can be had by anyone, Christian or non-Christian, a Spiritual Gift can only be possessed by a Christian. This is because to have a ‘spiritual gift’ you must first possess the Holy Spirit within you. You might have a natural gift that mimics a spiritual gift, but those will always glorify ‘self’ your accomplishments; a spiritual gift will always give glory to God…always. Natural gifts are inherited when you are born, spiritual gifts are inherited when you are BORN AGAIN!

The body of Christ is designed to work together. Ephesians 4:14-16closeEphesians 4:14-16 14 so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, 16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. (ESV) …then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the Head, that is Christ. From Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does the work.

When someone within the body of Christ is not functioning as they should we need to come alongside them, encourage them, help them to stand against what is trying to take them off course. In the same way we need to rejoice with someone when they are blessed by God, their blessing and joy should equally be ours! When we do not do our part within the body of Christ we could be ‘hindering’ the plan of God. Talents can be used for selfish ambition but gifts are only used for God’s glory! You can try to use a gift God has given you for your own ambition, but it will only be temporary. God will never share His glory with anyone. Don’t get so casual in your life that you lose sight of how holy you live.

Remember to base your life on the SOP’s [Stand Operating Procedures ]

Walk in LOVE…Walk in FAITH and always be LED by the HOLY SPIRIT.
