There is a difference between the wisdom of the world, versus the wisdom of God. The wisdom of the world has three characteristics: earthly, sensual and devilish. The wisdom of God, without giving the full list, is pure, peaceable, easily to be entreated, meaning it creates a peace and gentleness we can receive.
We are talking about godly wisdom. What is wisdom and where is it found? It’s nice to know how to get wisdom, but also how do I retain wisdom. The Bible records that Solomon was the wisest man ever, but it also says that he lost his mind towards the end of his life. He had all this wisdom, but he didn’t retain it. I don’t want to just have wisdom for a season, I want to attain it and know how to retain it.
Many of you know the story of Job; but God made this statement about Job, Job is one that fears God. Job was one that held God in reverence and awe. Job had all these adversities come at him, but it was not God that caused that. It was Satan that came against him with God’s permission; but God was bragging on Job, saying have you considered him. He’s a man that fears Me, meaning he is a man that reverences Me, he’s a man that stands in awe of Me. He has the fear of the Lord, meaning, he does the things that I’ve asked of him and he puts Me first. Keep that in mind as we read.
Go to the Book of Job, chapter 28 reading from the New Living Translation. Job 28:12-13closeJob 28:12-13
12 “But where shall wisdom be found?
And where is the place of understanding?
13 Man does not know its worth,
and it is not found in the land of the living. (ESV) “But do people know where to find wisdom? Where can they find understanding? No ones knows where to find it, for it is not found among the living.”
Wisdom is not found among human beings who don’t know God. The question is where is wisdom, where do I find it? There is the wisdom of the world, and there’s the wisdom of God. Professors and colleges have wisdom, but it’s not the wisdom of God. We need education and people to go to college, because that’s how we learn to function in this world.
But that is not where we will find the wisdom of God. We need philosophers, but we don’t need philosophers who try to tell us the wisdom of God. Wisdom is not going to be found in our politicians either.
To get wisdom, we have to find it from the Word of God. Look at Job 28:14closeJob 28:14
14 The deep says, ‘It is not in me,’
and the sea says, ‘It is not with me.’ (ESV) “It is not here, ‘says the ocean. ‘Nor is it here,’ says the sea.” Remember back when they were testing dolphins to try to get wisdom, hooking them all up trying to get wisdom. Man’s wisdom will go after all these things, but the Bible says it’s not in the ocean. It is not in the whales. Look at verse 21, “It is hidden from the eyes of all humanity. Even the sharp eyed birds in the sky cannot discover it.” From these verses, it is telling us that wisdom is not among the animals.
Job 28:15-17closeJob 28:15-17
15 It cannot be bought for gold,
and silver cannot be weighed as its price.
16 It cannot be valued in the gold of Ophir,
in precious onyx or sapphire.
17 Gold and glass cannot equal it,
nor can it be exchanged for jewels of fine gold. (ESV) “It cannot be bought with gold. It cannot be purchased with silver. It’s worth more than all the gold of Ophir, greater than precious onyx or lapis lazuli. Wisdom is more valuable than gold and crystal. It cannot be purchased with jewels mounted in fine gold.”
You may have wisdom to make money, but you need the wisdom of God to know how to handle the money, and to preserve the money. The question is where is wisdom found? It’s not found in money, in silver, in gold. Verse 18 says, “Coral and jasper are worthless in trying to get it. The price of wisdom is far above rubies.” This is pointing out that you can’t buy wisdom, it’s not for sale.
Verse 19 says, “Precious peridot from Ethiopia cannot be exchanged for it. It’s worth more than the purest gold.” Verse 20, “But do people know where to find wisdom? Where can they find understanding?” Verse 22, “Destruction and death say, ‘We’ve heard only rumors of where wisdom can be found’.”
We’ve heard of palm readers and the like, they say we need to tap into the dead, so we can get wisdom, so we can see what’s happening on the other side. The Bible is clear there is no wisdom in the grave. The grave is not where the wisdom is. All these Scriptures are telling us where you will not find wisdom. We won’t find it in death, in destruction, the verse says, we’ve only heard rumors of where it can be found.
Verse 23-27, “God alone understands the way to wisdom; He knows where it can be found, for He looks throughout the whole earth and sees everything under the heavens. He decided how hard the winds should blow and how much rain should fall. He made the laws for the rain and laid out a path for the lightning. Then He saw wisdom and evaluated it. He set it in place and examined thoroughly.”
God alone has wisdom, God alone knows how we can obtain wisdom. God alone strategically placed wisdom. Wisdom was with God in the Creation, wisdom was with Him in the foundation. We can’t go seeking our own understanding and be away from the wisdom of God.
Where is wisdom found? This is God speaking….before it was Job speaking, but here in verse 28 it’s God speaking. And this is what God says to all humanity; ‘The fear of the Lord is true wisdom; to forsake evil is real understanding.”
The Bible says that God alone knows and declares the source of wisdom. What is wisdom: it is the fear of the Lord and to depart from evil. The fear of the Lord is the reverential fear of the Lord. The Bible says it is the fool who says in his heart there is no God.
If you don’t acknowledge God, there is no wisdom. You have to acknowledge God for who He is to walk in wisdom. It is interesting to look at the way our nation has evolved. For example, Harvard University originally was a Christian college seminary. Look at where they are now.
Wisdom is found in the fear of the Lord. True wisdom is to have the fear of the Lord, not a tormenting fear, but reverential fear. When you fear the Lord, the Bible says you will forsake evil, because you have understanding.
Look what Paul prays for the church in Ephesians Chapter 1:17 “asking God, the glorious Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, to give you spiritual wisdom and insight so that you might grow in your knowledge of God.” He’s praying that we, in the church would have the spirit of wisdom and revelation.
Look at Colossians 1:9closeColossians 1:9 9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, (ESV) “For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding.” Understanding is one of the seven pillars of wisdom. We need wisdom in this day and age. The amazing thing is God wants us to operate in this wisdom. Wisdom is free, if we asked for it. James 1:5closeJames 1:5 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. (ESV) says ask, if you ask He will grant it.
You don’t start walking in the wisdom of God until you have a reverence for God.
Now how do I get wisdom? Go to II Timothy Chapter 3:15-17 (NKJV) “from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine (1), for reproof (2), for correction (3), for instruction in righteousness (4), that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
We are looking at how we get wisdom. We need good doctrine, all doctrine is teaching, we need to be taught the word of God. Our children need to be taught the word of God. All of us in here have matured to the point of where we are, because we’ve been taught and we retain the word of God.
What about the word “reproof”. The word reproof means, rebuke. Which means, it reveals what’s wrong and it proves or shows evidence that we are off-track. Before we knew Jesus we needed to be reproved and the Scriptures showed us where we missed the mark.
You can’t get wisdom, without being reproved. Children must be taught what is right and wrong. They need to be taught and so do we. God is so good, He will not reprove us without giving us a correction for the reproof.
The word correction is to restore to an upright state. God never shows us what is wrong without offering us a correct path to take. His word will always give lead back to an upright state, if we obey His correction.
The last one is Instruction in righteousness. Plainly stated, it’s God’s Word teaching us the condition that is acceptable to God.
We need to know the wisdom of God, we need to walk in the wisdom of God and we need to continue to ask in prayer for God to give us the spirit of wisdom.
Proverbs 3:13closeProverbs 3:13
Blessed Is the One Who Finds Wisdom
13 Blessed is the one who finds wisdom,
and the one who gets understanding, (ESV) in the New Living Translation I think it brings out some wording that helps us to understand; “ Joyful is the person who finds wisdom, the one who gains understanding.” Understanding is one of the pillars of wisdom, but understanding is having the ability to appropriate wisdom in our lives. Verse 14 “For wisdom is more profitable than silver, her wages are better than gold”.
Jesus is wisdom, He has been made wisdom unto us and He is our satisfaction. When we seek other things, other than Jesus, we will be unsatisfied. But the Bible says wisdom will guide you down delightful paths and her ways are satisfying. Proverbs 3:18closeProverbs 3:18
18 She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her;
those who hold her fast are called blessed. (ESV) says wisdom is a tree of life to those who embrace her and happy are those who hold her tightly. That is an awesome illustration of wisdom.
We get wisdom from the written word (the Bible) and the living word (Jesus). Jesus Christ is the Word of God and the wisdom of God made flesh.
Prayer: Father I pray this over Your people as it says in Ephesians 1:17-18closeEphesians 1:17-18 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you a spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, 18 having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, (ESV) “that the
God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints”. Amen!
